Only thing I know of in lore (and I'm not a mega-fan) that can disrupt/deactivate lightsaber blades is Cortis Weave (spelling may be wrong). It's made via Sith Alchemy and I know it's used as hilts and/or blades for weapons, and it might be able to be made into armour.

So a possible explanation for how smile-o-ren was disabling the lightsabers is less something he was doing and more something he was wearing. Not sure if it's in Disney canon but in the old EU there was a metal called cortosis. Just as rare if not rarer than beskar, it was rather brittle but had the unique property that when the blade of a lightsaber would make contact it would short out temporarily making the lightsaber nothing but a paperweight. The Republic would eventually ban it for obvious reasons.

Exactly! People have told me I'm racist for not liking the new movies, and all I've been saying the entire time is that I wish Finn was the main character. If not the main character then at least a side character with his own story arch that ties into the main story. Instead they hype him up a little bit in the first movie and then proceeds to shit all over him in the second and third, magnifying his cowardice again and setting him up with a useless comic relief arch that goes nowhere. Finn was a much better character than Rey.
